HEILIGE BOEKEN – De Garima-evangeliën uit Ethiopië
Fototentoonstelling en symposium

Vanaf 4 november tot en met 26 maart 2017 is in het Allard Pierson Museum de fototentoon­stelling HEILIGE BOEKEN – De Garima-evangeliën uit Ethiopië te zien. Het gaat om zeer oude geïllustreerde manuscripten met de evangeliën van Mattheus, Marcus, Lucas en Johannes, en tabellen voor het opzoeken van parallellen in evangelieteksten, ontworpen door Eusebius van Caesarea (circa 263-339). Door koolstof­datering kon recentelijk de ouderdom van de boeken worden bepaald tussen de vierde en de zevende eeuw; dit was een sensationele ontdekking, omdat dat eeuwen eerder is dan oorspronkelijk werd aangenomen. Het is bovendien het vroegst bekende voorbeeld van een compleet overgeleverde set afbeeldingen van de vier evangelisten.

Een bijbel met verschillende invloeden
De bijbel is vernoemd naar de legendarische monnik Abuna Garima, die in de vijfde eeuw het Garima-klooster nabij het huidige Adwa in Ethiopië zou hebben gesticht. De manuscripten worden daar bewaard en verlaten het klooster nooit. De foto's in deze tentoonstelling laten onder meer details zien van de prachtige illustraties op de manuscripten vóór de restauratie. De versierde canontabellen bieden een soort register op overeenkomstige teksten uit de vier evangeliën. In 2006 zijn de manuscripten gerestaureerd en opnieuw ingebonden. Tekst en beeld illustreren de eigenheid van het Ethiopisch christendom als onderdeel van de mediterrane laat-antieke wereld en laten invloeden zien van de klassieke wereld, de Egyptische oudheid en uit andere delen van Afrika. Deze manuscripten zijn uiterst belangwekkend voor bijbel- en andere studies. 

Uitnodiging
Op 3 november organiseert het Allard Pierson Museum een symposium over de Garima-evangeliën, met als afsluiting de feestelijke opening van de fototentoonstelling. Judith McKenzie en Miranda Williams van de Universiteit van Oxford hebben de tentoonstelling samengesteld. De foto’s in de tentoonstelling zijn gemaakt door Michael Gervers (Universiteit van Toronto) tijdens zijn verschillende bezoeken aan het Garima-klooster.

Bij de tentoonstelling verschijnt de publicatie The Garima Gospels. Early Illuminated Gospel Books from Ethiopia, een fraai geïllustreerde uitgave van Manar Al-Athar, University of Oxford, en alleen in het Allard Pierson Museum verkrijgbaar. Verkoopprijs € 69,95.  
 
Programma 3 november 
Tijdens het symposium komen internationale wetenschappers aan het woord. In de ochtend vindt vanaf 9.30 uur de sessie The Garima manuscripts revisited plaats en de middagsessie is getiteld The later legacy of Ethiopian art and architecture to the present. Om 16.00 uur wordt de fototentoonstelling geopend en wordt het eerste exemplaar van The Garima Gospels – Early Illuminated Gospel Books from Ethiopia overhandigd.

Holy Books: the Ethiopian Garima Gospels
Photo exhibition and symposium

 
From 4 November 2016 through 26 March 2017 the Allard Pierson Museum will be presenting the photo exhibition Holy Books: the Ethiopian Garima Gospels. The Garima Gospels are ancient illuminated manuscripts containing the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and a set of canon tables: the system designed by Eusebius of Caesarea (c.263–339) charting parallel passages in the gospels. Radiocarbon dating recently revealed that the manuscripts were written between the 4th and 7th centuries—a sensational discovery, as they were previously believed to be centuries younger. Moreover, the Garima Gospels are the earliest known example of a complete set of the four evangelists’ portraits.

Various influences
The Gospels were named after the legendary monk Abuna Garima, who allegedly founded the Garima Monastery near what is now Adwa in Ethiopia in the fifth century AD. The manuscripts are still kept there and never leave the monastery. The photographs in this exhibition show details of the beautiful illustrations before the restoration, among other things. The canon tables are exquisitely illuminated as well. In 2006 the manuscripts were restored and rebound. Both text (in the Ethiopian language Ge’ez) and pictures illustrate the unique character of Ethiopian Christendom as a part of the Late Antique Mediterranean and reveal influences from the Classical world, ancient Egypt and other parts of Africa. The Garima Gospels are extremely important for biblical and other studies.

Invitation
On 3 November the Allard Pierson Museum will host a symposium on the Garima Gospels that will end with the festive opening of the photo exhibition, which was created by Judith McKenzie and Miranda Williams (University of Oxford). The photographs on display were made by Michael Gervers (University of Toronto) during several visits to the Garima Monastery.

The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication of The Garima Gospels: Early Illuminated Gospel Books from Ethiopia, a lavishly illustrated work published by the Manar Al-Athar Project (University of Oxford) that will be for sale exclusively at the Allard Pierson Museum (€ 69,95).  


Programme for 3 November, 9.30 am–6 pm
At the symposium there will be talks by international scholars. The morning session will be entitled The Garima Manuscripts Revisited, the afternoon session The Later Legacy of Ethiopian Art and Architecture to the Present. At 4.00 pm the exhibition will be opened and the first copy of The Garima Gospels: Early Illuminated Gospel Books from Ethiopia will be presented.
